I keep having this reoccurring feeling that I truthfully haven’t had much of in the last ten years. I want to call my dad.

When he died I didn’t have a cell phone and eleven year olds don’t typically pick up the phone to call someone. I was too busy playing outside to call my dad. I just knew I would see him when he got home. So calling my dad isn’t something I did, so I’ve never really missed it.

But here lately, in my car, on the way somewhere, late at night, when something happens, after church, at work, so many times during the day.. I just keep feeling “I wish I could call my dad.”

I don’t really know what to do with it except I have this urging feeling that I’m supposed to write about it. I’ve started a few times and just couldn’t see where it was going. I feel like I’m always writing about my dad but it never fails that someone always needs to hear it.

So I keep thinking, like I do with most thoughts, what is God trying to teach me through this reoccurring feeling of wanting to call my dad.

God is our Heavenly Father and He wants us to call Him. He wants us to talk to Him and long to talk to Him. He wants us to talk to him all the time, it tells us in 1 Thessalonians.. Pray constantly.

My dad’s favorite verses were Jeremiah 29:11-13. So many people memorize verse 11 and they don’t even glance at the next two. That was my dad’s favorite lesson to teach. I remember one day looking over the balcony at our home into the living room where my dad was sitting as he told me about Jeremiah 29:12-13 “Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. You will seek Me and find Me when  you search for me with all your heart.”

Isn’t that what we do when we call someone? We call them, we talk to them and we want them to listen. If I could call my dad right now, I would tell him so much and he would listen. But I would also want him to talk to me. I would want to hear his voice as much as I could and record it so I could listen to it again and again. This is the way we should be with our Heavenly Father.

Call on Him. Talk to Him. Be near to Him and He will be near to you.

Seek Him and He promises that you will find Him when you search for Him with all your heart.
